Here at Illi- nois Tech there is more excite- ment and enthusiasm than has been prevalent at any other spring proceeding the baseball season. The grounclkeepers are feverishly working to get Ogden Field in shape and students and players alike are anxiously awaiting the call of “Batter Up!" First Game Tomorrow Tomorrow afternoon lllinois Tech will play its first ballgame of the 1941 season as the 'l‘cchawk nine travels to Lake Forest to take in the Forcster’s team in what will provide a top-notch thriller for what looks like a great base- ball campaign. Last year, Lake Forest beat the old Armour team in two closely fought games, but the ’I‘eehmen look for victory in Wednesday’s tussel. Let’s have a real turnout from the school. Take a ride out to Lake Forest and cheer the boys on! This is the first time that a base ball team will represent the new- ly formed Illinois institute ol‘ Technology on the pliy‘ing field. The team is equipped with uni‘ forms, including pluyers’ and man» agers’ jackets, designed with snow let and gray which represent the new school colors. There have also been several improvements in the school athletic equipment includ ing a new batting hitch-stop in Ogden Field. During the past years Armour has been competing in baseball free lance, but this year, since the merger with Lewis, lllihois Tech has the distinction of being an integral part of a respectable lea. guc, the Northern Illinois College Conference. This conference bee as member teams nines from Elm burst, North Central, Concordia. Wheaton and Illinois Tech. lie- ing a member of a college confer- ence should provide us with the necessary incentive to play l’er that old ”do or die” college spirit. Outslzmding Material For the first time in years the "l‘echawk team is blessed with out; standing material. An unusually large number of candidates report» ed for the first outdoor practice held at Ogden Field, Wednesday, April 2, 1941. This group included a number of returning letter men although the fine showing of fresh- men and sophomores insures a real battle for every position. if the breaks go in our favor the Techawk team should finish high in the first division of the em conference. “Aunt. uui u:- One of the most important items of the coming season for Illinois Tech is the fact that we have a new baseball coach. As you all know by now the man is Bernard “Sonny” Weissman. Whenever there is a new coach the team ac- quires a revived spirit which fre- quently produces a better team than during the preceding year. This theory is particularly true when the coach is outstanding. In “Sonny" Weismann, Illinois Tech is getting a man of unusual base- ball ability and rare leadership. His understanding of the players and his aptness at getting along with them, coupled with his ex- cellent knowledge of the game, should produce the best results possible. These included all of the indoor team and two or three men. The meeting was held to formulate plans for the out- door season, as well as, answer the new meet schedule. lieidcureich New captain The most important item on the program was the election of a captain for the remainder of the season. Harry Heidenreich, versa‘ ,;~\ . tile fieldman, was elected torthe coveted position with George Mat- thews being his closest rival. The election was held to fill a vacancy left when Captain‘elect Al Bujan failed to return to school this season. Eight Moots Planned The dual meets planned include Elmhurst, Wheaten and Loyola, North Park and Marston will furn- ish competition in the opening tri- angular meet. Wheaton and Elm- hnrs’: will meet the Techmen in a triangular meet which is being sponsored as an annual field day affair. Trophies and ribbons are being given for the meet. lllinois Tech also will partici- pate in two inter-collegiate meets. The Beloit Relays will see a select group of the Techwks entered in this, one of the most colorful out- door meets in the country. The full squad will be sent to compete with a score or more of the better Midwest colleges teams in the Elmhurst Invitational Meet. Trip to Peoria All of the meets will be travels ing except the opener. The Beloit Relays, being a gala night meet, will mark a fine trip for part of the squad. The entire team will make the train trip to Peoria for the Bradley Tech meet. Iinois ”loch indoor “leech: heoson Ends Illinois Tech’s track team fin- ished a successful indoor season two weeks ago when the Wheaten Crusaders fell before a powerful onslaught. The encouraging point of the Tech record is the come back the team staged to reach the climax. From a depleted one (hears squad sprinkled with a few questionable freshmen the team has developed into a formidable group. Win Halli ol’ the Meets The tracksters took a terrific lacing from North Central early in February and then were nosed out by Wilson a week later. Then on the last Wednesday in. Febru» ary, the team found. themselves. 'Jhicago Teachers and Morton were soundly. trounced that day as the Teachere ran up a very good score. The seemingly invin~ clble Loyola team managed. to just eke out a win from the Techawke. But for the rest of the dual sea» son only wins were chalked up when Wheaten and Elmhurst were beaten by sale margins. Thus the team ended the indoor season with three wins and three losses over teams which have on the whole shown better material, much improved over last season. licorc in flinch Malaya The team was of better calibre than that of last season in the relays. Bob Osborn’s third in the 440 was Illinois Tech’s only score, but the relay quartet were much, improved. The two mile of Way- ne McCullough, Edwin Johnston, George Matthews and Net Rather ran a very good race. The medley and the mile teams were likewise better. In the individuals, Dick Barry ran fast beats in both hurdle events. ‘ No Records Broken None of the school records were broken although they were ap- proached in one or two cases. The mile relay team of: Matthews, Saucr, McCullough, and Osborne were seconds short of the 3330.6 mark, but show promises of getting within a second or two of that mark. All in all. the indoor season was a, great success. The team spirit is the best in years and there is much potential ability on the squad.
