PilGE 8 By “Warren Spitz Art Jens, writing in Tot-ii Shorts of last week’s issue of Technology News. made an inquiry as towwhy Honor “1" had not conferred a letter award upon John J. Schom- mer, illinois Tech’s revered athle- tic director. We will take time om: to correct Art and reveal a few facts concerning Honor “I” and John. We presume that when Art. men- tioned Honor "1”, he was also considering its predecessor at Ar- mour college, the old Honor ”.4”. This organization was originated over 30 years ago and one of the 'men behind the formation was the some John Sohommer. in 1915, Mr. Schommer was made an honorary member of the group. At. an Honor “A" alumni banquet held in 1939. he was awarded a sweater and letter award in recognition of his many years of service to Armour. Of course, Art Jens, has made a good point in that John Echoin- mer has; not been presented an “I” representing eporte service to our new school, lllinois Teen. For that matter, no one lies as yet” been awarded an “l.” letter award. The illiuoie Tech Student As- sociailon line it under its jixrloeiio» lion to minim letter prowentationss. “We therefore propose time Elm E'E‘BA, and its presidoni Biol: hur- sxom, who it upon ihcmot’ires in present tiw firm “i" mraml of Hill» noin Tech to John Jooeph flicliom‘ mor, being: as. he in H'Fs number one man of armistice. Dr. Leigh is retired now a professor omertém of mechanical engineering. A3 hood of the golfers he received little more than his own satisfaction which we know he derived from teaching many young men the fundamentals of the golfing grime. There are of courec many others. They are modestly going; about their work at Illinois Tech and have been performing their duties, either at Armour or at Lewis. Let’s bring these people to the fore and at least honor them with the insignificant and yet what we hope will become a most treasured award, the “i” of lliinois Tech. BASEBALL TEAM STARTfi PRACTECE Plunkl Put her right in here! Watch that curve? Such are the cries as the Techawk basebaliers practice everyday in the Armour cheesebox, better known as the gym. Regularly for the past sev- eral weeks the beavers and re— ceivers have been patiently prac— ticing their chores in preparation for the coming hardball season. Next week the lads will move out into the open and will get to practicing in earnest. Since the spring zephyrs are now starting to blow across Ogden field and the field will soon be in excellent shape for playing, we should see some real workouts in the near future.
