Gunners remain on top in Premier League

After a week of Champions League
games the Barclay’s Premier League saw another
week of thrilling matches The Sunderland Black
Cats got their first victory of the season in 21
fashion over Newcastle United

This keeps Sunderland in the bottom
three, but improves to four points while
Newcastle sits in 11th with 11 points The
biggest match of the week was between Chelsea
and Manchester City that ended in a 271
Chelsea victory This improved Iose Mourinho’s
incredible home unbeaten record in the Premier

League with Chelsea with goals from Andre
Schurrle and the winner from Fernando Torres
while Sergio Aguero scored for City Chelsea
now sits in second with 20 points while City
sits at 7th with 16 points

Swansea City went up against West
Ham United in a 070 scoreless draw to keep
Swansea at 9th with 11 points and West Ham
at 15th with 9 points Tottenham Hotspur
continues to flourish inlife after Gareth Bale as
they were victorious in a 10 win over Hull City
with a goal from Roberto Soldadol Spurs now
are in 4th with 19 points and Hull City right in
the middle of the table at 10th with 11 points

Crystal Palace’s woes continued in a

270 defeat to league leading Arsenal that saw
goals from Mikel Arteta and Olivier Giroudl
Crystal Palace is in last place with three points
while Arsenal remains at the top with 22 points
Belgian starlet Romelu Lukaku and Leon Osman
paced Everton in a 20 win over Aston Villa to
put them in 6th with 18 points with Villa in 13th
with 10 points

Liverpool continues to produce
results as they beat West Bromwich Albion 41
behind a Luis Suarez hat trick and another from
Daniel Sturridgel Sturridge continues to lead the
league in goals with 8 while Suarez trails with 6
goals even after missing the first five games of
the season.

Liverpool sits in 3rd with 20 points
while West Brom has 10 points which is good
enough for 12th Manchester United needed a

Bulls welcome back Rose, win home opener

The “Windy City Assassin" is back
and boy did it feel like something out of a
movie The Chicago Bulls had their home
opener last Thursday against the New York
Knicks and made for one hell of a game
The United Center crowd roared and shook
the building as the starters were introduced,
especiallywhen it was #1 makinghis way to the
center of the court It was a playoff atmosphere
from the getegol

The Bulls still have plenty to work on
as they find their rhythm offensively over the
next few weeks There is still rust to wear ofi’
and all of the things you would expect out of a
team in the beginning of a season where they
get one of the most dominant players in the
game back in the lineup After a dis appointing
and almost blowout loss the reigning champion
Miami Heat, the Bulls and Derrick Rose were
ready to get their first win of the season.

The game started off great as
Carmelo Anthony struggled against a tight
Chicago defense which saw the Bulls up by 10

at the end of the first quarter Chicago stayed
in the lead for most of the night and lead by
as many as 131 Then came the fourth quarter;
Chicago struggled offensively and only made 2
field goals the entire quarter The Knicks clawed
back at the lead and tied the gamer Then Tyson
Chandler goes to the free throw line with 108
seconds left, shoots 12 and gives New York a
late 817801ead1

There was no doubt about who was
getting the ball nextl Thibodeau calls a time,
out and makes a great play call as they inbound
the ball, move it across the floor to Rose, who

was standing onthe wing near the baseline He
drives and sees Raymond Felton and 7efooter
Tyson Chandler make their way towards him
With 517 seconds left he risesl He rose and
connected on his signature floater, Chicago up

Rose maintained his stern demeanor

Women's soccer falls short to Olivet, St. Xavier

The Illinois Tech Women’s Soccer
team came out on the unlucky end of two
tight fought matches during the past week
The Hawks suffered a 10 loss to both Olivet
Nazarene University and St Xavier University

Traveling to Olivet, the lady Hawks
knew they were going to have their work cut
out for them playing against the previous year’s
NAIA national runnerseupl However, the team

was up for the challenge, and that is exactly what
they proved With a more defensive tactical
approach, the Scarlet Hawks were able to hold
Olivet to only one goal over the 90 minutes
Goalkeeper, Roxanne Myers came up big with
18 saves on the night, while the rest of the squad
defended relentlessly to keep the score at bay

Illinois Tech then added some
offensive pressure of their own late into the
match but it was too late The Hawks had a few
chances to equalize but the Olivet keeper was
able to maintain the shutout

Coming ofi’ that strong performance,
the result against the St Xavier Cougars was
more disappointing

Despite dominating possession and
having the more threatening opportunities at
goal, the Scarlet Hawks were unable to come
out on top

They kept constant pressure
throughout the game but just couldn’t manage
to find the back of the net

Unfortunately for the Hawks, a
miscommunication cost the team an own goal in

the 39th minute Nevertheless, they continued
to take it to the Cougars flooding them with
attack

Tech striker, Anida Phetchanpheng
had a golden opportunity late in the game to
find the equalizer ofi’ a through ball from Hailey
Kunkel, but the ball was just shy of the post
Poor finishing proved to cost the Hawks dearly
as they were visibly the better side in the defeat

of St Joseph and Cardinal Stritch University

Men's soccer loses against archrival, St. Xavier

Illinois Tech looked to knock off
conference rivals, St Xavier which would
have been their first win against St Xavier in
their last five meetings throughout the last
four seasons With a winning mentality in the
place, the Hawks came out with fiery passion
and intensity despite a rainy evening, as the
first half kicked off

The first halfprovided anexhilarating

  

string of sequences in which Illinois Tech
found themselves on the offensive sides of
the ball However in the 4th minute of play,
St Xavier found the back of the net on a poor
clearance by the Hawks defense

The Hawks were found down 170
and still 86 minutes left to capture their fourth
conference win. Their best chance came of a
beautifully played through ball by midfielder
Brandon Ramirez to Bart Grabowskil The ball
just sailed over the crossbar and Illinois Tech
went into halftime down 1701

found himself splitting two defenders and
having a nearly one on one with St Xavier’s
keeperl The laser shot hit the crossbar and was
in disbelief However, the Hawks continued
their relentless attack with key chances
