Tuesday, October 22, 2013 | " Women's XC stays strong at Lucian Rose invite April Wanagas TECHNEWS WRITER After a week off racing, the Lady Hawks cross country team traveled back to Kenosha, Wisconsin Saturday morning to take on a deep field of competition in the Lucian-Rose Invitational hosted by University of Wisconsin Parkside. Racing again on this hill—laden course, the ladies were more ready with an extra five weeks of training under their belt than when they faced it in week two of their season. Having perfect weather conditions near 60 degrees, the ladies knew their plan had to be executed well to attack the hills aggressively and maintain top pace for all 5 kilometers. Facing another deep field of 25 teams, the lady hawks had to try and get to the main hill first to avoid getting stuck in a slower pack of runners. Getting assigned a great starting box, the starting cannon fired and the ladies took off. With the position the girls started in, they were able to find the shallowest part of the half-mile long hill and get over it with ease. Targeting the remaining flat section of the first mile, the ladies then were set to start picking up the pace before the rolling hills began. With teammates in sight, the girls raced in and out of the woods looking to keep up with the fast competition in hopes of reaching a new Personal Record (PR). After passing through the final chute and crossing the finish line, three of the top five ladies did just that. Courtney Rouse ran a PR of 19:18, again finishing first for Illinois Tech, followed by Anne Crotteau and Sara Glade. April Wanagas and Greta Zola were the next two hawks to cross the finish line with times of 21:33 and 21:36, each reaching a new PR. Their team score put them in 16th placing, falling to top schools such as Marquette, Northwestern, Ferris State, DePaul, and University of Minnesota Duluth. Some of the schools the lady hawks outscored include Upper Iowa, Madonna, Alverno, Cardinal Stritch, and Chicago State. The cross country team looks forward to racing again next week at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Brooks Invitational, a 6k race with a completely flat course. As they will be facing an even bigger field of competition, the ladies look forward to resting up this week and getting ready to make every mile magnificent. fie lllfi'i'i‘l'v‘ifél III’IIA'I'E Men's Soccer 7pm, Stuart Field Women’s Volleyball 7pm, Keating Women's Soccer 7pm, Stuart Field VS.
