TechNews | Tuesday, October 22, 2013 Women's soccer undefeated for third straight week Veronica Torres TECHNEWS WRITER The Women’s Soccer team remains undefeated for three consecutive games after Tuesday’s tie with Purdue Calumet. The Scarlet Hawks settled for a 3-3 draw after overtime, in what proved to be a very physical match. From the get-go, the Hawks looked strong, creating combinations and threatening the Calumet goal. In the 13th minute, leading goal scorer— Adrianna Maron—added another to her tally after tucking the ball away off an assist from Anida Phetchanpheng. However, Calumet was able to respond and the half ended 1-1. Again, the Scarlet Hawks got to a quick start off the whistle, getting a go-ahead goal just minutes into the second half. This time it was Phetchanpheng who would find the back of the net with a shot into the upper 90. A few minutes later, the Peregrines managed to get behind the Tech backline and equalize. However, the Hawks responded immediately with another goal, as freshman Aesha Iackson sent a ball over the head of the Calumet keeper from 30 yards out. The Hawks would hold onto the lead until five minutes left in the match, when a Calumet cross hit the post and bounced back perfectly to the feet of Sandra Lozano to finish. The remaining minutes of regulation and overtime proved to be dramatic with several chances at goal for both teams, but the score would stay locked at three. In the previous week, the Scarlet Hawks came away with two wins to start their unbeaten streak. The first win came after a tough battle against University of St. Francis. The game winner, Whitney Theisen headed home off a corner kick with just 10 minutes left in the match. Goalkeeper Roxanne Myers had another stellar night along with the Hawks defensive line to maintain the shutout. Later in the week, the Hawks played host to the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders. Illinois Tech extended their win streak with a convincing 4-0 win with two goals coming from Maron, another from Phetchanpheng, and one from Veronica Torres. The Scarlet Hawks improve to 4—8-1 as they look to extend their unbeaten streak and take on 13th ranked Judson University. Women's volleyball dodges victory, Lady Hawks keep fighting Roma Mirutenko STAFF WRITER The Illinois Tech Women's Volleyball Team was faced with playing against two solid opponents, Cardinal Stritch and St. Xavier, last week. This week was also important because it was their annual Dig Pink game to raise awareness for Breast Cancer research. The Scarlet Hawks were up against Stritch who proved to be a strong competitor last Tuesday night. With the final scores 25-27, 20-25, and 1 1-25, the Scarlet Hawks fought through the whole match. Major contributors for the game were junior Taylor Duman with 9 kills, and Seniors Kate Kendall and Roma Mirutenko with 8 kills each. Junior Shea Manley finished with 19 assists while Senior Brittany Mead finished with 14 digs. For the second game of the week, the Scarlet Hawks were up against St. Xavier. The Hawks had just played them the previous week and were ready to fight. During this nail biter, the Hawks came close to winning, but fell just a bit short. While the Hawks were fighting a lineup, change proved to be for the better. Junior Shea Manley controlled the team leading them with 32 assists, and senior Kate Kendall finished with 13 kills. By switching up the lineup, they allowed for some new faces to come in and contribute to the fight. Freshmen Cassie Hansen and Irena Grazinis were vital to keeping the Hawks in the fight. They ended the night with final scores of 11-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-21, and 15-17. Next week, the Scarlet Hawks will face Robert Morris, and play in the Crossover tournament in Indiana. World Cup qualifying teams almostfinalized Nathan McMahon SPORTS EDITOR Qualifying for this summer’s World Cup in Brazil has nearly been completed around the globe. To begin in Africa, not a single nation has yet completed qualification due to the continents schedule, but with ten countries left and five available spots for the World Cup it will be a tight finish. So far the top nations have been Ivory Coast and Ghana while the Nigerian Super Eagles are also looking strong. In the Asian qualifying region there have been four nations to directly qualify leaving two teams to earn a spot through a playoff. The teams that have qualified are Iran, South Korea, Japan, and Australia. This leaves Uzbekistan and Jordan left for the playoff. Meanwhile in the CONCACAF region the United States has clinched the top qualifying spot followed by Costa Rica and Honduras. Mexico was barely able to hold onto the fourth spot in the group which places them in a playoff match against New Zealand. Mexico’s World Cup dreams were salvaged by two late United States’ goals in a game against Panama to put Panama beneath Mexico in the table. The South American qualifying group has also completed qualifying matches with Argentina topping the group followed by Colombia, Chile, and Ecuador. Uruguay must win a playoff match against an Asian qualifying group nation in order to advance to the World Cup. Brazil as the FIFA WORLD CUP host nation has automatically qualified for the tournament and is looking as good a pick to win the World Cup for a record sixth time. The UEFA qualifying group is dynamic as you will find with the regulars such as Germany and Spain having qualified while Bosnia and Herzegovina clinched their first World Cup appearance as an independent country Other qualified nations are Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, and England. This has left many strong nations to play in playoff matches. The playoff nations are Croatia, Sweden, Romania, Iceland, Portugal, Greece, Ukraine, and France. There is still much drama to come in the World Cup qualification matches remaining. Image courtesy of ggarmycom
