Tuesday, November 12, 2013 | TechNews City dazzles while Palace struggles in Premier League Nathan McMahon SPORTS EDITOR This weekend in the Barclay’s Premier League was highlighted by the battle of the top four teams between Arsenal and Liverpool. Arsenal was able to disrupt the fluid attack of Liverpool and got goals from Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey in their 2-0 win to push them further up in points with 25 while Liverpool sits behind in third with 20 points. Crystal Palace was once again beaten to keep them at the bottom of the table in a 2-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion. This leaves Crystal Palace with just 3 points while West Brom pushes up to the top halfof the table with 13 points. One of the strangest goals that will ever be scored was scored by Stoke City’s goalkeeper, Asmir Begovic, in the first 13 seconds of the game as he scored a 100 yard goal that skipped over the Southampton keeper’s head. This ties Begovic for top scorer on Stoke city while Iay Rodriguez brought the Saints even to avoid losing all three points. Southampton remains a mere point out of the top four with 19 points while Stoke have escaped the bottom three with the point and have 9 points. Manchester City put an absolute battering on Norwich City in a 7-0 win. City got goals from five players with the other two goals coming off Norwich City own goals. City has 19 points now while Norwich is now in the bottom three with 8 points. Manchester United finally looked like league champions as they absolutely dominated Fulham to a 3-1 win with goals from Antonio Valencia, Robin Van Persie, and Wayne Rooney in the first 22 minutes. United moved up the table with 17 points while Fulham continues its dreadful start with just 10 points. Chelsea struggled in a 2—0 loss to Newcastle United after its busy week with Champions League and League Cup matches as well. Newcastle got their goals from Yoan Gouffran and in form Loic Remy to give them 14 points while Chelsea remains in second with 20 points. Hawks take down defending conference champions Bart Grabowski TECHNEWS WRITER The Hawks looked to get back in the win column Tuesday night, hosting the Cardinal Stritch Wolves in a conference showdown. The Wolves were currently on a 9—game unbeaten streak and were receiving national votes for the NAIA division. IIT looked to break their S-game losing streak and officially end their 10-year run in the CCAC and NAIA Division. The Hawks are moving to the Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference and NCAA Division III in the upcoming years. Illinois Tech started the first half strong with great sequences of possession within the first 15 minutes of the game. The Hawks looked poised to score early as forward Sam Smith had the Hawks first best chance. The shot came from a touch by Smith just around Cardinal Stritch’s defender. The Wolves outstretched keeper saved Smith’s shot. Shortly after, senior forward Robert Rixer gave the Scarlet Hawks a 1-0 lead. The goal came off a missed header by a Cardinal Stritch defender. Rixer volleyed the ball into the back of the net just 15 minutes into the game. The Hawks took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Illinois Tech looked to keep their first half momentum going, in what looked to be a hard fought second half. The Wolves opened up the second half with numerous offensive sequences, which kept the Hawks on their defensive heels. However, just 10 minutes into the second half, the Wolves found the back of the net from their midfielder Taylor Bacher. Throughout the second half the Hawks and Wolves exchanged shots, but neither could break the 1-1 tie. Both teams were now primed for an overtime battle. Illinois Tech was verged to score in overtime by providing relentless pressure in the beginning minutes of overtime. It turned out to be the game winner and the Scarlet Hawks prevailed in their last CCAC conference game ever. Illinois Tech finished off their season with a 6—9—3 record, and 4—7-1 record in conference play. The Hawks look to win their last game of the season as they face Nebraska Wesleyan University as Illinois Tech hosts their Provisional Independent Tournament Championship.
