HUMANITIES ‘11 In last week’s edition of TechNews, I wrote an article criticizing the way in which both President Anderson and Athletic Director Mitchell had failed the university’s scholarship athletes by failing to increase their scholarships to match tuition hikes? The newspaper’s sports editor, Ciara.n KohlieLynch, provided Anderson and Mitchell with an op en invitation to respond to my criticism inlast week’s edition. Disappointingly, but not surprisingly given the character of both men, neither has taken the opportunity to do so? Indeed Enzley failed to respond to emails and letters left in his mailbox over the course of the last week The fact theyhave nottaken the chance to explain their actions to the disillusioned and angry student athletes at the university speaks volumes? In short; they can’t? How can anyone defend the decision to breakpromises of full scholarships to athletes by no longer covering the increase in their tuition costs? Or the decision to not inform athletes face to face that they were going to do this, instead leaving them to find out when they opened their fall 2011 bill? The blame for the way this was handled lies squarely at Mitchell’s feet? He has shown absolutely no respect for any of his athletes since he started at IIT, and he now heads a department that openly protests a g a i n s t h i s leadership The fact that Mitchellhas felt the need to act in this manner to raise money is down to Anderson The funding that the athletics department is given at IIT is nothing short of atrocious? Anyone who has used the facilities at Keating Sports Centre will be more than aware of this? Students are currently paying annual tuition fees of $37,093 and they are rewarded with athletic facilities that wouldbe unacceptable at an average state high school? Keating Sports Center is simply too old, too small, and too full of holesievery time it rains the building is floodedifor a student population of a little over twoeandeaehalf thousand? The reason the facilities at IIT are so bad is because the universityprovides just 1% of its entire budget to athletics? This is laughable, and the sole responsibility for it being so low is President Anderson Unfortunately, it is depressingly clear that there is not much that anyone without a P170 to courtesy ofIIT Magazine position of power can do about fixing the mess that Mitchell and Anderson have created at the university It seems clear that both men will continue to run the department into the ground in the near future? By doing so, they will continue to deprive students of the athletic facilities they deserve, the standards of the varsity sports teams will continue to drop and scholarship athletes will continue having the promises they were granted upon joining the school broken All because two men have implemented a policy to transition IIT from the NAIA into the NCAA D3 at as small a cost for the university as possible? They have gotten away with things so far because no one has yet raised their voice up to complain? Perhaps it is time to start Achieve a cognizant, blissful soul Ameena Payne TECHNEWS WRITER We are in a unique position within the tech world to strengthen our sense of connection with each other by sharing what we learn onlineithe knowledge in our own lives, in our own wordsiat a local level, but connected internationally? With the commitment in our belief in mindful living and social responsibility, I wanted to take the initiative make something of value to others? The purpose of the weekly articles are to reveal our soul’s purpose, lessons and obstacles inthis lifetime;the articles are meant to be a way to process, release, and transform energy blocks that we might be experiencing in our life? I sincerely thank all who read the upcoming articles; thank you for your positive, uplifting light and support Each of us can inspire another to rise above our circumstances? May we all take the positive insights of each day and turn them into action tomorrow Together we rise in consciousness When our energies are blocked and cannot flow or when thoughts and energies are over, active, imbalance manifests in all areas of life? Our body responds to the way we think, feel and act? This is often called the “mind/ body connection?" When we are stressed, anxious or upset, our body tries to tell us that something isn’t right? Harmonizing and aligning our thoughts to positive outcomes is how we can choose to start manifesting balance Take a moment to think about the following questions: in what environments do you thrive? Block time in your weekto ensure you’re spending quality time alone in that setting What kind of outcomes do you want to manifest? How much time and effort are you currently putting into make that happen? What five people do you spend the most time with; are these people you grow from? What thoughts/emotions occupy your mind the most? In each moment, we have the power of choice? We can choose to become aware; aligning thought with actions takes a lot of courage to accept and even more persistence to change We also have the freedom to make the decision to not shift our thought to the positive? We can choose to be honest with others, and ourselves but we also have the freedom to not do so? By taking an honest look at these questions, we may be adding a new piece to our life puzzleibringing us closer to our purpose Over the next few weeks, my goal in is for us to think about the thoughts occupy our minds the most and what steps we need to take to reframe our thoughts to manifest positive, sustainable growth I encourage your responses and feedback?
