The Spaniard held off Kimi Raikonnen and Lewis Hamilton, who finished in second and third place respectively, to climb into third place in the season’s standings. In his 31st career victory, Alonso stated how important it had been to secure second and first in his last two races following his forced retirement in Malaysia earlier this year. The Ferrari driver won by an impressive 10.1 seconds and will be happy about his per- formance on this difficult track and confident going into the remainder of the season. Alonso stated, “I still had some pace in my pocket. But it was not always easy to understand the race.” England’s Lewis Hamilton will be happy with his second consecutive podium finish. Starting from pole position, the Mer- cedes driver did not have enough pace to chal- lenge the more powerful Ferrari or Lotus. After being overtaken by Ferrari drivers Alonso and Felipe Massa early in the race, Hamilton never had the chance to retake the lead, let alone consolidate his pole position. As the race wore on, it became abun- dantly clear that it was all going to be about who could make their tires last, and knowing when to attack and when to ease. Alonso’s team read the race perfectly and will now hope that he can build on this win, and justify most punters’ early belief in his title challenge.
