It started off with a heartbreaking loss to the Trinity International University Trojans. Tech came in strong and ready to play; Captains Rebecca Bograd and Kate Kendall were ready to earn a conference win, but were shocked when the underdogs took it away from them. The Trojans senior Rebecca Campbell finished the match with 9 kills while junior Allison Boggs provided 26 assists. Kendall finished with a team high of 16 kills, sophomore Taylor Duman finished with 8 kills and senior Mariska finished with 7. To pick themselves up from a devastating loss, Tech threw themselves back into the gym at 6:00 am. for two days to prove to themselves, and to their coaches , Iacqui Gatt and Kayla Heller , that they were the most hard working team in their conference. This drive to win carried over to their match on Thursday against Iudson University, which they won 3 72. This match was a turning point for the Scarlet Hawks in terms of conference play. In this match senior setter Bograd played smart, running the middles forcing Iudson to try to defend against the diverse offense being run by Tech. Iunior libero Brittany Mead finished with a match high of 20 digs. After this win, Tech went on to play on Saturday against St. Ambrose University. They were coming off their 10 ss against Trinity International. Tech’s mindset was to play hard, like they had on Thursday night, and to keep running a diverse offense. When it came to game time, Tech took the first game 2523, but fell short the next three. St. Ambrose was able to push the Scarlet Hawks defense into overdrive by spreading their hitters across the net. Tech was able to fight back at times, but even with balls being picked up, the offense was not able to terminate against this great blocking and digging team. This coming week, Illinois Tech plays Roosevelt University at Keating Gym, at 7:00 pm as well as St. Xavier University on Thursday.
