Student newspaper of Illinois Institute of Technology since 1928 Campus prepares for homecoming By Ryan Kamphuis EDITOR-IN-CHIEF An llT tradition dating back to the early years of the university, homecoming is a week in September where llT alumni come back to their alma mater for a week of festivie ties and celebrations In the past, homecome ing had always been an understated event, but through the hard work of llT’s Union Board and Alumni Association, the week of home, coming has become one looked forward to by many students, and one of the high points of the academic yearn Taking place September 16 to Sep tember 22, this year’s homecoming is already beginning to come togetherl Planned as a cele ebration of the 1960s, the theme of the week is going to be ‘Across the Universe? Many of the events taking place throughout the week will follow this theme and hearken back to the 1960s While in past years homecoming festive ities had mainly limited themselves to Morton Acme The Un Image courtesy of Union Board & photos by Melanie Koto& Pranamee Sarma [from fall 2011) Park in front of Vandercook, this homecoming will have events all over campus The main event that many students look forward to is the traditional homecome ing carnival As always, Morton Park will be filled with inflatables, food, and other games the night of the carnival In addition to these things, there will also be a few 1960s cover ba.nds performing at the carnival, and many costumed interpreters Another popular event during homecoming is the homecoming dancer While in the past the dance had been held in Morton Park, this year the dance will be in Hermann Hall The dance will also see the crown, ing of the king and queen of HT, and the an, nouncement of the winner of a campusewide game of assassin which will be beginning in SeptemberIOther traditional events that will take place during the week of homecoming include the golf cart parade to guide students from the carnival to the soccer field for the homecoming game, spirit events throughout the week, and the returning of HT alumni to campus to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their graduation. One of the exciting new events that will be going on during the week of homecoming is a Headphone Disco Party in the BOGI Homecoming is one of the biggest events of the HT year, and many people are in, volved in ensuring its success , Union Board is working with both the Office of Campus Life and the Alumni Association to plan out and execute this year’s homecoming Within UB, Katie Peters, Brittany CrawfordePurcell, a.nd Kaylynn Barker are working with the Home, coming Committee and the UB iMPACT VPs Fernando Mier and Sharbacha Edwards to make homecoming happenl As homecoming gets closer, more details will begin to emerge as to when and where these events will be happening For the most up to date information on homecoming, and many other campus activities, one can check out ubliitledul technewsiit.com OPINION 2 CAMPUS 3-4 AErE 5 SLIPSTICK 6 SPORTS 1 Greek life offers p051t1ve experiences Byjeff Bednarz & Miriam Schmid GREEK COUNCIL PRESIDENT & GREEK COUNCIL VP OF COMMUNITY Coming to college, I knew exactly what I wanted; get good grades, meet other students, get involved in organizations that look good on my resume, and get the best job possible when I graduated Joining a Greek organization wasn’t at the bottom of my list of things to do , it wasn’t on the list at all Does this sound familiar? Despite these plans, within two weeks of being at HT, 1 had joined the Greek community At the time, I could never have imagined that Greek Life would be a significant part of my life at IIT What could change my mind in regards to Greek Life in only two short weeks? Meet, ing members of the Greek community who were involved as Orientation Leaders, Resie dent Advisors, volunteers for moveein, and leading organizations across campus made me realize that Greek Life could offer me a way to fulfill many of my college goals and beyond Going Greek at HT is rarely what people expect when they think of fratere nities and sororitiesl We are nothing like the “Animal House" stereotype that Greek Life often has We focus our attention on scholarship, brother/ sisterhood, a.nd phi, lanthropy We provide opportunities for our members to perform community service, work together on academic work, and build bonds that will last lifetimesl If these are things you are interested in, then it would not be a bad idea to check out Greek Life If you talk to Greeks at UT, the majority of them will say that the best def cision they have made in college was to go Greek Often times you’ll hear that our members didn’t plan to go Greek, but for one reason or another they did and haven’t looked back since We encourage all stue dents to come around the Quad and see what we are all about We understand that Greek Life isn’t for everyone, but we do have a wide range of things to offer people We are always looking for new members who we can help improve in all areas of their life All Greeks have had a different experience with Greek Life, but in the end it has affect, ed all of their lives in apositive way So don’t be shy and stop by Want to know more about Greek life @ HT?
