Tuesday, November8, 2011 I TechNews campus@technewsiit.com UTSAV GANDHI 3 TBTN Week promotes assault awareness on cam - us By Hannah Larson ASSISTANT EDITOR For the second year in a row, HT Feminists United (EU) is sponsoring their Take Back the Night Week, this week, November 6 through Friday, November 11: Take Back the Night is an international movement that usually consists of a march and rally in support of those who have become victims of assault, usuallydomestic and sexual, according to the official website of TBTN, takebackthenightorg: EU has taken this tradition, that dates back to 1975 in Philadelphia, and stretched it to a week filled with speakers, workshops and discussions focused on how to bring about assault awareness to IIT’s campus, as well as prevention measures The week kicked off with a self- defense workshop in the MTCC Ballroom, where attendees were able to learn defensive moves to protect themselves if an assault were to be waged on them: In order for this event to take place, FU partnered with Teresa Helena Moreno, Women’s Programming Coordinator at IIT: Today’s first event is a lunch discussion event, hostedby Shimer College, called Proceed with Caution: Consent on Campus in the QLC at 12:50 pm, with lunch provided courtesy of Shimer College: Later tonight, there will be another speaker and discussion event called Sexual Assault & Reproductive Justice with Benita Ulisano in the Life Sciences Auditorium at 8:15 pm: Wednesday, November 9 will be a healthy relationship workshop called Between Friends in the Brown Room in the MTCC at 12:50 pm: Wednesday will also be the day of the keynote speaker, Dear Lisa: In 1994 Lisa Santoro became a victim of domestic violence when her ex-boyfriend murdered her: Since them, her father, Tom Santoro, has been speaking on behalf of his late daughter on the topic of dating violence, and its prevention: This speaking engagement will start at 8:30 pm: in the Wishnick Auditorium: FU invites everyone interested in participating in the TBTN rally to attend the po ster-making session on Thursday in Perlstein Hall at 7 pm: to decorate posters and decide what slogans will be chanted during the march, as well as discuss the week’s previous events, with any concerns, criticisms, or ideas of how to further awareness on campus: Friday, November 11 willbe the rally where interested parties will march around campus, symbolicly “taking the night back” If interested, meetby the MTCC at 33rd and State Street to join in the noisemaking: The march will end in the Quad, where there willbe a vigil for those who have suffered from domestic and sexual assault: There will be a bonfire, as well as free food after the event! Students are encouraged to check the Finances Tab on the MyIIT Portal to determine if they have any holds preventing registration: There are specific reasons why a hold may exist on a student account and these can be identified easily on MyIIT: Outstanding Balance Any outstanding balance on a student account will prevent a student from registering for classes: To determine if there is a balance on a student account, please complete the following: Login to MyIIT, select the Finances Tab, and select Manage My Account under Manage Account in the middle column: Select the Manage My Account button and view your Current Account Status on TouchNet: Students with an outstanding balance need to pay the balance to register: Payments can be submitted on the TouchNet system directly, following the steps above, or in person at the Cashier’s Oifice located in Main Building, Room 104: If you have questions about your balance, please contact the Bursar’s Oifice at bursar@iit: edu or 312-567-3794: Outstanding Financial Aid Requirements Any outstanding financial aid requirements on a student account will delay disbursement of federal funds: If federal funds did not disburse, please complete the following: Login to MyIIT, select the Finances Tab, and select holds under Financial Aid Requirements in the middle column: Unsatisfied requirements must be submitted to the Oifice of Financial Aid directly via e-mail at finaid@iit:edu, fax 312-567-3982, or in person at Main Building Room 104: Once a student submits documents, the Oifice of Financial Aid will review these within 7- 10 business days: Once all outstanding requirements are satisfied on MyIIT, federal funds will disburse to the student’s account: Immunization Compliance Students are required by Illinois State Law to provide proof of proper vaccine history to the Student Health and Wellness Center: If a student has outstanding immunization requirements, spring registration will be prevented: Any questions should be directed to Celia Mayora at cmayora@iit:edu: International Students International students may have outstanding requirements to keep their student status at IIT: Students with a hold due to a status-based issue should resolve it with the International Center: Questions can be answered by contacting their oifice at icenter@ iitedu or 312-567-3680: Image courtesy ofMohini LaI ISO prepares for IFest 2011 By Prachi Chachondia TECHNEWS WRITER The International Students Organization has revamped itself this year and is back with a bang this semester, with a new board and lots of fun events in tow A group geared towards promoting the culture and diversityof the international studentbody at IIT, where it makes up almost 43% of the total student body - the highest percentage in the country They are here to give international students a platform to showcase their cultures and to give domestic students a chance to take part in some of their awesome festivals and events: ISO brought to you the Zombie Hunt, Ski Trip, movie nights and lots more, and now it is time for the year’s biggest event: International Festival! The 36th Annual International Festival will happen on the 11th of November 2011 (Friday): The two-part event starts with the Taste of HT, where student organizations rally around to face their greatest challenge yet: cooking! Each group will have their food booth, and they’ll be bringing their aprons to make prepare some of the best foods from all over the world for IIT to savor: You’ll get to sample exquisite foods from indigenous cuisines of different countries, and a lot of snacks to pick up before that 13:50 lecture! Taste of IIT will be followed by the cultural event: the Evening Showcase, where we’ll have students bringing to you some amazing performances: There’ll be singing, dancing, acting, trivia and tons of prizes to be won! We’re even having a fashion show, where you’ll get to see your friends dress up in their traditional attire and show it off on the catwalk! Did we also mention the evening event is free? UT evaluates NCAA move By IIT Office of Media Relations Last spring, TechNews ran multiple articles about IIT’s potential move from the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) to Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA): Not only did the newspaper conduct an interview with President Anderson, but received feedback on the decision from the student body, including student athletes: The process has moved forward, as the following press release discusses: TechNews welcomes any and all student feedback on the NCAA move: To weigh in on the process, please e-mail our Opinion Editor, Ryan Hynes, at opinion@technewsiit:com: Chicago, November 4,2011 , Illinois Institute of Technology (HT) is currently evaluating a new association for its athletic pro grams: At the present time, IIT is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC): A move to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III is under consideration, and discussions are now taking place to determine the benefits to the University of such a transition: The proposed plan, which would have IIT becoming a full member of NCAA Division III by 2018, would provide expanded opportunities for more student-athletes as well as add to the vibrancy of campus life: The number of sports in the IIT athletics program would increase from 10 to fourteeniand the move would allow IIT to compete against universities with similar academic profiles and institutional missions: “For IIT, which is one of Chicago’s top research universities, the benefits of NCAA Division III membership go far beyond the athletics program,” says Enzley Mitchell IV, IIT’s Director of Athletics: “In addition to being able to attract a larger number of students who can compete in the classroom, as well as on the playing field, more postgraduate scholarship opportunities will be available to IIT student- athletes who want to continue their education after earning their undergraduate degree” “The time is right to explore the possibility of NCAA Division III membership,” says John Anderson, President of HT: “Sports play an important role in campus life and leadership developmentiand we want to explore which aifiliation is best for IIT’s athletics program in the years ahead” For more than 50 years, IIT has fielded highly competitive teams at its main campus on the South Side of Chicago: Today, more than 130 men and women compete for the Scarlet Hawks in 10 sports: men’s and women’s swimming and diving, cro ss-country, track and field, and soccer, as well as men’s baseball and women’s volleyball: IIT is known throughout the world for its undergraduate and graduate education in engineering, architecture, design, applied technology, law, business, psychology, and sciences and letters: The university is also recognized for its world-class research in such areas as smart grid technology, sustainable energy, and medical imaging ias well as its innovative, interdisciplinary curricula that emphasize entrepreneurship and teamwork: Membership in the NCAA would would allow IIT to compete at the varsity level against universities that share some of these education and research interests with us, thereby bringing more attention and visibility to the university
