Tuesday, Septemberzo, 2011 | TechNews GRAEMEPORT sports@technewsiit.com E::E;EB 7 Men's soccer wins third straight game By Graeme Port SPORTS EDITOR After two extremely impressive away wins last weekend against Indiana Wesleyan (RV) andBethel College (#19), theMen’s Soccer team (#29) continued theirgood run ofform on Saturday afternoon as they comfortably defeated Lawrence Tech 370 at StuartField. The Hawks started the better of the two teams and took a deservedlead in the 25th minute, when Philippine international Robert Rixer rose gloriously in the penaltybox to bullet home a famous header from a Graeme Port cross. TheHawks continued to press for the remainder ofthe firsthalfi but a combination of good goalkeeping and poor finishing saw the score stay at 10 going into the halftime break. The team came out in the second half determined to put the game beyond Lawrence Tech and in the 56th minute the Hawks added to their lead. Graeme Port picked the ball up on the left wing and after beating the Lawrence Tech defender he crossed the ball across the face ofthe goal, where Ciaran KholirLynch was on hand to fire into the back ofthe net for the Hawks second. The home team still had time to pick up a third goal before the game was done, with Liam Barrett nodding his own rebound off the crossbar into the back ofthe net forhis second goal in as many games. With the 30 win the Hawks improve their overall season record to 37271 with just two outrofrconference games left on the team’s schedule. The team will be in action again this Tuesday evening at Stuart Field when they face Ashford University, whose team si ranked 22nd in the nation. Kickroff is at 7 pm. Ph 0:05 by Melml IE Kern & Sebastian Mayales Prudn Volleyball drops two games By Kayla Heller STAFF WRITER The Illinois Tech Women’s Volleyball team suffered two tough losses last week, bringing them down to a 171 conference record and a 5710 overall record. The Lady Hawks lost their first conference game last Tuesday, falling to Robert Morris in a threergame match. Illinois Tech was never able to find a rhythm in their play and dropped the games 19725, 21725, 22725. Sophomore Kate Kendall led theHawks with 12 kills in the game while freshman Shea Manley chipped in 8 kills ofher own. The Hawks turned right around and played their second game the next day against Davenport University. The Hawks took the first game 2523 and it looked like they had turned their luck around. Unfortunately, Davenport wasn’t ready to give up and they ended up coming back to win the next three games (187 25, 7725, 18725), resulting in another loss for the Hawks. Kendall had a doublerdouble for the Hawks, contributing 13 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Taylor Duman and Senior Kayla Heller each added 8 kills while Iunior Rebecca Bograd tossed out 31 assists in the match. The team is looking to turn things around this week as the girls bring their game back home for 3 straight matches. The Volleyball team plays on Tuesday (September 20), Thursday (September 22) and Friday (September 23) against SaintXavier University, Cardinal Stritch University andLawrence Tech, respectively.
