Tuesday, April 1 9, 2011 I Hawks beat nationally ranked team By Melanie Koto STAFF WRITER Last Wednesday, the Hawks went one for one again against the Fighting Saints of the University of St. Francis. St. Francis took the first game, but the Hawks held their own against the nationally ranked team in the sec— ond. In the first game, the Hawks took the lead in the second inning, but St. Francis tied up the score in the fourth, and the game held at a tie through the seventh, forcing the game into ex— tra innings. St. Francis scored in the eighth, a TechNews run unanswered by the Hawks for a win for the Fighting Saints. Iunior Luis Montoya pitched a complete game, and only gave up 4 hits. In the second game of the afternoon, the Fighting Saints took an early lead in the sec— ond with 2 runs. In the bottom of the third, the Hawks answered with 3 runs. The score re— mained the same until the sixth inning, when the Hawks scored 4 additional runs to increase their lead to 7—2. Senior Mat Bednarz pitched the complete game, also only giving up 4 hits. Due to rain, the Hawks games on Saturday were postponed. Their next home game is Fri— Scuba class with Bob Huff By Ashlie Ingold STAFF WRITER Have you ever been interested in Scuba Diving? Well here’s your chance to learn how! April 19—21, 6p.rn.—10p.rn. (the signap catofi is Sunday April 17). Ev— eryone needs to complete the online coarse prior to Class and have their own masks and snorkel. $150 total ($120 — PADI, $30 — Bob Hafi) Mike Zhang says he loves scuba because, “Scuba diving is the next closest thing to walk— ing in space! If you can’t afford a space craft, don’t miss out on scuba.” and “The earth is 70% water, so it is meant for scuba divers! I’ve dove in some cool places in Florida and played with sting rays the length of my body” Scott Mochinski would like to say that, “There was a great turnout for the two Dis— cover Scuba days held in the Keating pool. Not only were all 20 spots filled, the great people from Sea Lions Dive Shop accommodated ex— tra people so that everyone who showed up could experience scuba diving.” The Discover Scuba events seem to show that there is enough on—campus interest to form a scuba diving student organization. Forming a student organization would allow for the purchase of school/club owned equip— ment and would allow for student organization funding to cover some, or maybe all, of the costs of lessons and scuba outings. The costs of scuba equipment and lessons are two of the main reasons people do not pursue scuba div— ing more rigorously What we need are students interested in running and being members of the student org. Being a student org officer is a great way to get valuable leadership experience and it looks great on a resume or grad school applica— tion. Anyone interested in being either a scuba student org leader or member should contact Scott Mochinski at: smochins@iit.edu To sign up go to: www.padi.com/scubacon— nect and enter the promo code: R—19411 Bob’s PADI store is LEARN SCUBA CHI— CAGO. You will need to pay $120 for the on— line component directly through the PADI website. The pool component will cost $30. You can bring check or cash to the instructor on Tues— day. Once you have completed the online por— tion and the pool dives, you will be ready to go out and do your open water dives. You can do this with any PADI instructor, anywhere in the world, including Capt. Bob Huff; there are several others in the Chicagoland area. ”’9.
