Student newspaper of Illinois Institute of Technology since 1928 technewsiit.com Opi ion 3-4 Campus 5-10 AErE 11-12 The Slipstick 13 Sports 14-15 3.29.2011 | SGA Exective Board Elections PRESIDENT CAROLYN KOS Carolyn Kos hopes to make the HT experi7 ence enjoyable for all students by maintaining communication with students and faculty, so everyone has a voice Kos wishes to focus on drafting a plan of what HT needs to improve on within the next 5710 years and hopes to have each committee work on a longiterm goal that will bring about a lasting, positive impact When it comes to leadership, Kos is handsioff, serving mostly as a guide and coming in only when necessary She hopes to lead others by example and give senators and executive board members a chance to develop as people and leaders Kos is currently in her third year in biomedical engineering and has been an SGA Senator, followed by holding office as VP of Student Life for the past year Kos is currently serving as Vice President of Alumnae and Here itage and Philanthropy Chair of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority She has played an integral part on the Food Advisory Committee and has helped propose for Late Night Dining at IIT BOMMIREDDIPALLI SASANK Not present at the debates, Sasank Bom- mireddipalli is a mechanical engineering graduate student whose goals cover the pure view of many different positions, including Finance Board Chair and VP of Communii cationsl Bommireddipalli hopes to gather the MOSHFEGHIAN ELNAZ Elnaz Moshfeghian’s main priority is to strengthen SGA from the inside out She believes the toughest challenge SGA faces is being able to truly reflect the interests of the entire student body However, by foster, ing a supportive, fun, and engaging environ, ment, Moshfeghian hopes to empower and spread enthusiasm amongst senators work, ing toward positive change Moshfeghian’s leadership experience includes serving as a Resident Advis or, team leader for Alternative Spring Break 2010, and Chair ofthe 77Eleven Advisory Committee Her main efforts are focused on continuing the progress on the Foreign Language Program, IPRO 20, Gal, vin 24/5, and unveiling UCal, a project she founded Moshfeghian implements a more handsion approach by pairing committee members with senators and making sure ex, ecutive board members are adequately pre pared to serve as an advisor and a guide to more I‘BSOLII‘CBSt opinions of the HT community, implement the suggestions of the various colleges, and maintain transparency of the funds allocated to various student activities A weak under, standing of what the president’s duties are is apparent, as no mention of previous SGA projects and specific plans for progress were made More importantly, a vision for SGA’s future was not communicated in a construci tive manner Lastly, completing his under, graduate studies elsewhere seriously limits his knowledge of the concerns and needs of undergraduates at IIT While his deter, mination and eagerness to work with fellow students toward change is clear, an ability to handle the many responsibilities of SGA president was not evident in the candidate profilel VP ACADEMIC AFFAIRS JOVI OVHORI Iovi Ovhori’s main priority is better, ing the relationship between students, their advisors, and the CMC He is currently the Academic Excellence chair of NSBE, is on the board of the African Student Organizai tion, and involved with RHAl He’s passion, ate about getting students more interested in excelling academically, as well His top prii orities would be to continue the committee’s work on the foreign language program, make all lectures available online both in video and downloadable pdf form, and working with the ARC to make old exams available to stu7 dents as a learning tool Ovhori was at an NSBE conference at the time of the debates, so unfortunately he wasn’t able to expand on any of his ideas with concrete pla.nsl AUSRINE RAKAUSKAITE Ausrine Rakauskar‘te, a secondiyear CAE major, has been involved in organizations as diverse as NSLS, HT’s Badminton Club, and the Commuter Students Association. Her overriding concern for the Academic Affairs Committee is obtaining feedback from stu7 dents and academic departments to identify the academic issues most important to stu7 dents She also wants to test a fixed syllabus at HT 7 requiring professors to have lesson plans and exam dates finalized before the start of any given semester At the debates, connecting students with the academic and career resources available to them on campus was a priority for Ausrinel We were a little concerned, however, about the lack of any mention of the Students Speak results for academic departments, and the CMC Adi visory Boardl EXECUTIVE VP Dhara Shah wasn’t able to make it to the debates, but took the time to record a video to make her case Though she is running uni opposed, we appreciated the chance to hear more about her ideas Thanks to her time leading Engineers Without Borders, she has a strong background of executive experience, and she’s also been heavily involved with Haiti Outreach and Kappa Phi Delta Her primary goals for the Executive VP position would revolve around SGA senators 7 run, ning meetings effectively, helping senators develop, and running workshops She also wants to use the position to follow up on Stu, dents Speak survey results with departments on behalf of students FINANCE BOARD CHAIR CHUKWUDI ILOZUE Chukwudr‘ Ilozue wasn’t able to make it to the debates due to the National Society of Black Engineers conferencel He’s currently Treasurer of that organization and as part of his position has raised $25,000 in funds (a record for IIT’s NSBE)l He’s also the VP of Finance for the African Student Organizai tion and on the RHA Housing Committee He’s running for Finance Board Chair due to his interest in finance management His chief concern for Finance Board is equality in the distribution of finances for all organizations We wish we had been given the opportunity to get more details on his plans for the posi7 tion to provide a better evaluation of his can, didaturel BERNIE Bernardino Mendez is an experienced candidate, having already served on Finance Board for two years He’s very familiar with the proposal process, and one of his main prii orities is to get rid of the red tape involvedl He wants to make sure that no one is denied funding because of a technicality, but would like to see more detailed followiup budgetsl He sees this position as being a facilitator between SGA, student orgs a.nd OSLl Mendez said that he always looks for accountability when con, sidering a proposal, reviewing the bylaws and guidelines frequently He didn’t specify other possible funding criterial Overall, he would bring significant experience and a focus on the process and inner workings of Finance Board to the position, but his vision for fund allocai tion remains unclear
