Tuesday, February 1, 2011 I TechNews GRAEME PORT sports@technewsiit.com 11 Cricket Club prepares for spring tournament By Paarth Chheda TECH N EWS WRITER It has been a great year since the formation of the IIT Cricket Club: I am sure with the level of interest with which the students of different countries participated in the events last year, it does not require an introduction this time: Once again it is the time of the year when the IIT Cricket Club announces its spring events for any and all who are interested in playing cricket (or just watching it): For cricket lovers, I can assure you this article is going to bring a big smile to your face, and for those who are new to this sport, IIT Cricket Club members will be more than happy to teach you and bring you up to speed: For students who participated in last year’s Keating Premier League (KPL), we have some exiting news and surprises coming: This year’s KPL will be a 6eweekelong event with $270 to be awarded in prizes: For those who are keen on keeping up with world cricket, we will be bringing the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 to you: The tape tennis tournament will be start, ing on February 19th and will run through the next 6 weeks, with matches played every Sature day A maximum 0f20 teams will be allowed to participate, with 6 players each (plus a maxi, mum of 2 substitutes): The format of the tour, nament will be round robin, with 4 groups of 5 teams each $120, $90 and $60 will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners respectively As a matter of fact, I would also advise inter, ested players to register their teams before the slots fill up: For registration, dates, tournament rules, or any other questions, please visit the IIT Cricket Club website at www:sites:g00gle: com/site/iitcricket: In addition, we are also going to be televise ing the World Cup matches at Keating Sports Center: For information on the matches that are going to be televised (and the schedule), please visit our website: Don’t think KPL is going to be challenging enough? Lacrosse Club seeks members By Mike Purdy TECHNEWS WRITER Last week, the Illinois Institute of Technol ogy Lacrosse club (or IIT Lax) became an of, ficial student organization on campus As the sport of lacrosse continues to spread and gain popularity throughout the midwest, many students at IIT have expressed interest in the sport and took it upon themselves to provide its excitement to the rest of the student body The first general body meeting for the IIT Lacrosse club will be held on Thursday, Feb, ruary 3 at 9:15 pm: in the MTCC Ballroom: This meeting is for anybody interested in par, ticipating in the club, whether experienced or inexperienced This meeting, led by IIT Lax President Wes Tish, will highlight the fundamentals of la, crosse, set goals for the organization, include an overview of equipment, and set times for future meetings and practices: The other ofiie cers of IIT Lax include Treasurer Phil Monday, Public Relations Joey Hynes, and Vice Presi dent Mike Purdy If you are a natural athlete or just looking to be part of a fun and emerging club on campus, be sure to check out the IIT Lacrosse club: Intramural Soccer League eager for season By Ashlie Ingold STAFF WRITER Not interested in the Intramural Basket, ball League that just started, but still want to get off that couch and come to Keating with teammates? Then you’ll be delighted to hear that the IIT Intramural Soccer League begins Sunday February 6: The season will last until Sunday April 24, with games being played on Sundays 6:00 pm: 10:00 pm: (depending on how many teams register, there is a possibility that some games will be played on Wednesdays 8:00 pm: 711:00 pm): The league is open to all students, faculty, staff, and alumni of IIT, Shimer, and Vandere cook: Squads must have 5710 players with 1 goalie, 4 on the court, and a maximum of 5 substitute players: All squads must be reg, istered by February 4: How do you register? Send an email to iitintramuralsoccer@gmail: com: You may either sign up as a team or as an individual to be placed on atea.m: The league is free of charge to all who wish to join: Samah Onaissi, one of the organizers of the league, encourages “everybody from all skill levels to come and join us for some competie tive fun. The atmosphere at the gym is amaze ing during the games and there is nothing like exercising while having fun doing so: Indoor soccer rules apply as follows: , N0 slide tackles allowedl , 4 players and 1 keeper on the court at a time (5 players total): , Squads have to be registered by February 4: , Since the league will be longer than last semester’s, up to 10 players are allowed to be on a team: , Referees will be from the IIT Varsity Soc, cer team: , Red and yellow cards will be handed out for illegal challenges: , A Red carded player will be left out of play for 4 minutes then substituted by another player (his team will play a player short for 4 minutes): Red carded players cannot play again in the game they receive a red card in, however they can play in the next game: , A Yellow carded player will be left out of play for 2 minutes and can resume playing after the 2 minutes are over (his team will play short a player for 2 minutes): A group dedicated to the league, scores, and updates will be launched on Facebook throughout the entire semesterelong season.
