4 RYAN KAMPHUIS UTSAV GANDHI SWE hosts resume- building workshop By Madhushree Ghosh STAFF WRITER On January 18 the Society of Women En— gineers, together with the Career Management Center, organized a resume—building work— shop for the students of HT. Open to all, it was attended by both graduate and undergraduate students and was an educational guide to writ— ing a successful resume. The event was a joint venture of The Society of Women Engineers, the driving force that es— tablishes engineering as a highly desirable ca— reer aspiration for women and empowers them to succeed and advance in their aspirations, and HT’s Career Management Center. It was essentially an interactive session that encour— aged students to put their ideas across to the advisors and write their resumes simultane— ously. Important and valuable information on how to format a resume, tailor it for different job positions and use power words helped stu— dents to rebuild and restructure their resumes into perfect tools for the job of their dreams. As pointed out by CMC advisors, a resume is a thumbprint of one’s work life and thus should have eye—catching, short and proper informa— tion that, in the 15 seconds devoted to each of as many as a hundred resumes, should make an impact on the employer. A format for the resume, together with a sample, was handed out to each student. Ad— vice on incorporating some of the words used by the employers in their job descriptions into the resume (thus making the employers able to relate with them) came to be handy. The im— portance of mentioning student organizations that one is a part of, as well as volunteer work (which counts no less than a job description) were pointed out at the workshop. The work— shop was like a practice session that included everyone’s opinions and contributions to building the perfect resume and in an hour’s time painted a clear picture of what ‘the re— sume that wins jobs’ should be like. Students with individual questions or concerns were further encouraged to make appointments at the CMC for specific advice. It was undoubt— edly a perfect lunch break for all career—seek— ers who are looking at the upcoming career fairs and CMC programs as a head start to their successful careers. .4 Working with people requires essential facilitation competencies . stewarding the process- . ." developing balanced participation . managing distractions- ' . dealing with difficult situations Register for this event by January 29th! campus@technewsiit.com // TechNews I Tuesday, january25, 2011 Get ahead of the pack: CareerLaunch programs at Stuart By Kushan Trivedi TECHNEWS WRITER Coming into the spring semester, many of the students who would be graduating five months from now might have already start— ed a job hunt. Many others might be eyeing summer internships during their summer vacations. The Career Management Center at HT Stuart School of Business has come out with the right thing for them (and at the right time). The CMC at HT Stuart is launch— ing two series of CareerLaunch programs this spring, both aimed at different crowds. The CareerLaunch Intensive series has been designed to cater to the needs to HT Stuart alumni, students who graduated in December 2010 and international students who still have 60 days left to declare their OPT status. This series will be having sessions twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, for a pe— riod of f i v e weeks, starting January 18 and going through February 24 (with the exception of February 1 and 3). This series is defined as a Premium Stu— art Specific program by the HT Stuart CMC, developed to assist people in their quest for employment. The second series of the CareerLaunch pro— gram is a High Octane Stuart Specific program which the Career Management Center at HT Stuart has initiated, keeping in mind the career development of 2nd year graduate students, students graduating this spring or summer and those looking out for summer internships or co—ops. The sessions for this series would be held for a period of 10 weeks starting from Jan— uary 24 and carrying on till April 4, with the only exception of the spring break on March 14. These sessions for both the series of Ca— reerLaunch programs are being held by the Stuart CMC Director and Facilitator, Mr. Lu— igi Pecoraro. Not only is Mr. Pecoraro guiding the students in getting their targeted jobs, but he is even assisting them with preparing their j ob—specific resumes and cover letters. Mr. Pec— oraro will also be answering participants’ que— ries, concerns and challenges, from clarifying their career paths to conducting an effective job search. CareerLaunch is a new initiative, based on HT’s motto of how important it is in today’s modern world to be strategically competitive. These programs are highly encouraging, not just for local students at HT but even the in— ternational students, considering the current competitive job market scenario in the United States after the recession of 2008. Note: Registration for either of the series of CareerLaunch programs can be done by mail— ing Mr. Luigi Pecararo on luigi.pecoraro@stu— art.iit.edu or by calling him at 312—906—6555.
