Tuesday, Apri128th,2015 | TechNews sga@iit.edu E§;I 3 End-of—semester Finance Board update Jacob Aynessazain SGA FINANCE BOARD CHAIR Finance Board finished out the semester with our last hearing on Saturday, April 18. Advising was held the week prior to the hearing, from Monday, April 13 at 12 pm, until Thursday, April 16, at 6 pm. Over 56 organizations submitted proposals that were considered for funding. We’d like to share with you some statistics from the hearing and others that help us look ahead through the end of the semester. Amount requested - $806,474.21 Amount allocated - $365,549.09 Programming 76.5% Conference/Competitions 16.2% Capital 5.7% Operations 1.6% Total remaining for Fall events— $225,000 (approximately) Looking at the statistics for the upcoming semester, Finance Board was able to follow its mission almost entirely, by funding programs to impact student life and student involvement at IIT. Like before, we have continued to fund conferences and competitions for organizations looking to benefit their membership through real world experiences, with the hope that they will bring 2015 what they have learned back to IIT. In the near future, Student Government Association (SGA) is looking to work with the Career Management Center (CMC) about the greatest impact of events that do not directly benefit the [IT student community, events such as conference and competitions, major specific career fairs and other events. ' Look forward to sharing your thoughts and ideas about what the Student Activities Fund (SAP) should and should not fund, through a survey that will be available throughout the summer, into the beginning of the Fall 2015 semester. The results of this survey will be used as a tool while drafting the new mission of the SAP. We highly encourage you to voice your opinions to ensure you get the most out of your IIT experience. Finally, if you know of anyone who you think would be a great addition to SGA’s Finance Board please send a recommendation to IITSGAFinanceBoardChair@gmail.com. Being a finance board advisor is a large time commitment but can allow you to make a large impact at IIT and give back to all students and student organizations. Interested parties should be familiar with the proposal process, be capable of acting without a bias and be prepared for a small interview that will replicate the proposal process. ae@technewsiit.com .:!:E! a Netflix and Nachos top 16 summertime collection Timothy Ayodele TECHNEWS WRITER Here at TechNews, we respect those who, over the summer, utilize their resources in order to get internships, advance their education, or get a good job and make that green. We also understand when that need to just be a lazy slob kicks in, and all you want to do is eat ramen noodles and watch Netflix, so I put together a list of the top 16 movies to watch to burn the day away. Keep in mind these are the opinions of ya boy at N&N, and everyone is entitled to their own. 16: “Charlie Bartlett” Now this is a gem that you don’t come by often. Directed by Ion Poll, this movie follows the days of a young Charlie Bartlett as he struggles to find himself in public school. A lot of crazy adventures (like selling prescription drugs to students) ensue, and the whole thing is simply a blast to watch. 15: “Bronson” Does British hyper violence sound appealing at all? Well “Bronson” throws you right in the middle of a London bloodbath. This biopic by Nicolas Refn depicts the various debacles of London’s most notorious prisoner. Enough said. 14: “Underworld” Though I have not seen this movie K .‘ . MflHTlH IJlWREflflE. ._ Will. SMITH l BOYS l| in quite some time, “Underworld” still holds a special place in my heart for being that one OG vampire movie. The battle of vampires and Lycans (werewolves) has never been this visceral in this Len Wiseman film. 13 “Django Unchained” Personal gripes aside, Django isn’t awful. It has all the wit and action of a good Tarantino movie with a star studded cast to boot; however, it lacks the depth of a true Quentin classic, along with the slight overuse of some pretty distasteful humor. Overall, this is a good watch, but the Quentin movie coming up is even better. 12 :“Robocop” (0G) You know that new Robocop Hollywood force-fed us a couple years ago? Throw that into a fire, ‘cause it’s got nothing on the Paul Verhoeven OG Robo-badass. 11: “The Longest Yard” A moment of silence for our dear friend Adam Sandler. Oh Adam, it’s seemed like after '06, you just lost the child-like humor and delivery that made me love you in the first place. Now all I’m left with is this eulogy to you by Peter Segal that marks one of the last movies of yours that I legitimately laughed at. 10: “Crank” Jason Statham hyperviolence. Must watch. 9: “Kill Bill” (vol.l Sr 2) LEONARDO DintPRIO MARTIN 5605356515» in THE. WOLF with Now THIS is Quentin Tarantino action done right. My God, the epic of The Bride on her path to revenge is a sight to behold. Glorious swordplay. 8: “Don Ion” This movie is going to be real for a lot of people, and-nasty for a lot more. If you want the hard truth with a dash of romance, this Joseph Gordon Levitt movie is a classic, but be warned: you will be uncomfortable. 7: “The Wolf of Wall Street” This movie is the sole reason that this is a top 16 list and not a top 15. So good I had to put it somewhere. This Martin Scorsese movie on the glamour and hype of the Wall Street life is sexy, smart, clever, and soon to be another Scorsese classic. 6: “Gladiator” You’ve seen the rest, now watch the best. There have been many, many gladiator movies, but none have quite done it like this one. A Ridley Scott flick that perfects a movie archetype tried and failed by so many before. 5: “American Psycho” Like Christian Bale? Like thrillers? This movie is both, with the added bonus of being hilarious. A Mary Hamon must watch. ' 4: “House of Cards” You thought this whole list was going to be movies, huh? It most cases, it probably would be, but no list of Netflix greats ._ "3"": rutrl nu Ir _rlnl HIunu—w is complete without House of Cards. This political fiction is aggressive, riveting, and about as exciting as Sunday night football, but has the setting of C-SPAN. Yes. 3: “Bad Boys 11” Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are the perfect combination of ball-busting cops. Once you watch the Michael Bay classic, that sentence needs no explaining. 2: “There Will be Blood” To the untrained eye, this movie seems like just another western. This is a grim mistake. The dynamic of each character is emotionally gripping and the movie constantly has you asking for more. Do not sleep on my boy Paul Thompson Anderson. 1: “Breaking Bad” There is only one reason why Breaking Bad topples even movies for the number 1 spot on this list; the show is impeccable. Every season delivers and every episode provides insight to the larger story. Few shows have ever been able to pull of five equally amazing seasons, a feat from Vince Gilligan that is not to be ignored. So there it is, 16 movies that you— maybe even some buddies or that special someone—can enjoy for an entire summer. It was a great ride this semester, and we’ll see ya’ll next year. Ba“ c1- .
