Tuesday, October 7th, 2014 | Wm LIFE and HACE host M8M fundraiser Zaira Ortiz TECHNEWS WRITER Latinos Involved in Further Education (LIFE) and the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhance- ment (HACE) gathered for their first bi— —weekly fundraiser of the year on Thursday, October 2, , 2014. The fundraiser revolved around the theme of America’s favorite candy, M&M’s. LIFE and HACE members offered participants the opportunity to guess how many M&M’s there were in a classy, fall themed, decorative glass for only 25 cents. Struck by the glass’s beauty, participants guessed multiple times in an attempt to win the beautiful glass bottle. Along with the M&M glass bottle, participants were in an atmosphere that was surrounded by candy music, energetic LIFE and HACE executive board members and volunteers, and clever slogans that would make any candy lover laugh. Executive Board members and volunteers were dressed in their favorite M&M color. Some of the favorite M&M colors were red, blue, yellow, orange, green, brown, and pink. It truly was a candy filled event! The M&M Fundraiser took place on the MTCC Bridge. It started at 12:40 pm. (the beginning of the lunch hour), and lasted until 2:00 pm. (the end of the lunch hour.) Partici— pants included professors, students, and staff members. The Fundraising M&M’s table on the MTCC Bridge was filled with a diverse bunch of participants. Some participants analyzed the bottle closely, considering the volume of the bottle in relation to the volume of a single M&M, and others let fate decide the number of M&M’s in the jar for them. The energy on the bridge was inde- scribable. The executive board member who was a red M&M gave hugs to every participant. The yellow M&M board member asked every participant their favorite M8rM color. The brown M&M played candy music, and made everyone crave M&M’s with his sweet tunes. The green, blue, and pink M&M dressers brought participants from all over the MTCC to the Bridge. The orange M&M handed out free M&M’s while munching on some as well. The environment was so candy oriented that it made everyone who passed by feel as if he/ she were in Candy Land. It was a unique experi- ence. All profits from the fundraiser will be going to covering the costs of a professional national conference LIFE and HACE mem- bers take at the end of the year that promotes education, networking, and professional de- velopment for attendees. LIFE and HACE will continue fundraising on Thursdays every other week at the MTCC Bridge, during the lunch hour, in order to cover the majority of the costs for this end of the year conference opportunity. All support is greatly appreciated. Finally, the M&M’s are not gone! Students, faculty, and staff had the opportu- nity to guess how many M&M’s were in the beautiful glass jar again on Monday, October 6, 2014 on the Bridge at 12:40 p.m. For free hugs, M&M’s, and a good time, stop by and support IIT’s LIFE and HACE community here on campus. After Monday, the final count will be taken and the winner will be announced at the LIFE and HACE General Body Meeting on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Perlstein Hall, Room 108. Be sure to stop by for snacks, priz- es, and information on future events. Come see firsthand what the IIT community is buzz- ing about. Galvin Library’s Student Ad— visory Board, which is now renamed as Stu- dent Library Advocates had their first meeting last Thursday. The meeting was held in Kemper Gallery, one of the most enchanting places in the Library. The room was packed with many new faces and this was the first time they had such a huge group of students. The meeting started with the intro- duction of the members and library staff. They then exchanged their thoughts and concerns regarding the service provided by the library. The students were very happy to get to know about the services provided by the Library and were willing to share the information with their other fellow beings. The board meeting was really different from the previous board meeting. What are they doing differently this year? This year they are more focused on out- reach and need help spreading the news about their services, collections, programs and spac— es. The board members will help them work on improving the services, and spreading their word around the campus. The Paul V. Galvin Library is com- mitted to enriching and enhancing the edu— cational experience for students and to that end they will continue to work with students to gather input, but they also need students to assist in outreach to the IIT community. The advocates comprised of undergraduate and graduate students from various disciplines, will meet a few times each semester to learn more about library services, collections and space, developing effective communication strategies for reaching out to students, fos- tering programming ideas, helping identify trends in the students’ use of services and re- sources, and participate in the development of surveys or focus groups. The students who volunteered to join the Student Library Advocates will be able make an impact on student life on campus as well as add a line item on their resume under Campus Activities and Leadership Opportuni— ties. They will represent the entire IIT community and make library services available for everyone. If you are not on board and still have any questions then please email Jennifer Worrell, Assistant to the Dean, at jworrell@’ iit.edu. She will be able to assist students with their concerns. Also please note that if any of the student organization wants to bring aware- ness among their members, regarding the special research assistance available in library, then they should kindly e—mail Lisa Massen- gale, Coordinator of Reference and Instruc- tion, at lmasseng@iit.edu and she will be more than happy to come by at one of the group’s meeting and give a presentation regarding the services provided by library.
