Tuesday, October 7th, 2014 | TechNews ‘ campus@technewsiitgcomI October Sharing Table focuses on LGBTQ history Shireen Gul COPY EDITOR The Student Center for Diversity and Inclusion, the Oflice of Campus Life, and HT Dining Services recognized the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Queer/Question (LGBTQ) History Month at a special Sharing Table on Thursday, October 2, 2014, in the Mc- Cormick Tribune Campus Center Commons. The Sharing Table is held on the first Thursday of every month during the academic term. It is a special program that helps foster personal interaction between undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty. You can engage yourself in spirited conversation about hob- bies, culture, sports, or current events while dining at The Commons. A small group of stu- dents are given a chance to learn a great deal about their instructors in this type of social setting. LGBTQ History Month is a month— long annual observance of Lesbian, Gay, Bisex- ual and Transgender (LGBT) history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. Many students, faculty members and staff attended this event. A number of colleges and uni- versities, as well as some law schools, have implemented Safe Space programs to provide resources and support for individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgen- der, as well as persons who might have ques— tions about their sexuality or concerns about a friend or loved one who is LGBT. HT is a safe zone university and they make sure that everyone is treated equally. This month is celebrated with the same enthusiasm like any other event of the year. There are many other events following up in the celebration of this month. One of the interesting events is Safe on Campus LGBT Ally Training, which is or- ganized by The Office of Campus Life. It will facilitate a two-hour ally training session for interested students from 6 pm. to 8 pm. on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 in Siegel Hall, Room 203. This workshop is intended to educate the campus community on the history of LGBTQ persons and help identify terms and experi- ences through engaging activities. The next sharing table will be held on November 9, in the Commons. As a small reminder, please don’t forget Student Center for Diversity and Inclusion (SCDI) also has personal invitations that you can give to your instructors. Iust send an email to scdi@iit.edu and they will let you know how to get your card. Last but not least, don’t forget to fol- low them on Twitter and Instagrarn @iitdiver- sity and like them on Facebook at SCDI IIT. Photos by Shireen Gul
