Armour‘Takes Five Out of Eight Matches ,_sconi=; 23—11 For their first out of town nil-CL, the Armour grapplers hopped a bus and traveled to Noperville where they met and defeated North Cen‘ tral’s squad 23—11. This win evened up matters for the wrestlers who lost to practically the same team last year. Each match was well fought, the losers in every bout giving a good account of themselves, going down only under the superior skill on the part of their opponents. There was nary a dull moment with everyone, including both teams, being content- ed with the way things were carried out and the way things turned out. rmour Gets to Work In the 125 lb. class Armour was donated five points in so much as North Central had no opponent for Ropek, their man having failed to make his weight. This was the be ginning of the scoring spree. Dunne tackled W. Dover-spike in the 135 lb. division and proved just too much for him. The bout ended in 2:50 when Dunne slipped the stretcher on his opponent, it being stopped to prevent any serious complications. Patterson followed Dunne, taking 0:. another Doverspikc, and proved to be so clever that he took his man to the mat only twice, both times with pinning holds. The first time L. Doverspike freed himself by slipping under the ropes, but the second fall was successful, the match ending in 1:48. The Schmidt~Hartman, 155 lb. tux.- Seven Armour [Wen Enter Golden Gloves Seeking new fields to conquer, Coach ’VWeissman has entered a seven man hidhll‘l thil'lhhl. ' team in the Golden Gloves tourney sponsored by the Chicago Tribune. Since this is the first time that Ar- mour has entered this boxing classic, the team has been placed in the nov- ice division. Those competing are Joerns at 125 pounds, Allegretti, 134, Seidenberg, 145, Moore and Krok at 147, and Simeon and Stober at 175. Part of the team weighed in last Thursday and the remainder of the boxers will do so this week. sle, was without a doubt the most in- teresting of the evening. It was one in which superior skill was pit- ted against strength. Schmidt started out on the bottom, but his reverse wrist lock was too much for Hartman, who reluctantly traded places with him, a place which he held on to during the remainder of the match. Bob gave him everything he had, applying pinning hold after pinning hold, but each time Hart— man, by sheer strength, worked loose, in the process taking as much punishment, probably, as he ever ran into. After several attempts Schmidt finally succeeded in applying the stretch, which [or the second time tonight proved invincible, the fall re- sulting in 8:46. Armour’s scoring ended when Krcml defeated Albrecht with a time advantage of 8:35. Final Two to North Central The remaining bouts went to North Central, one on a fall and the other by a slim time advantage. Sumner, still in his slump, lost a match which was anybody’s, Adler holding the slender time advantage of 1:37. Tullgren, who took on Ncachtlc in the heavy-eight division, gave a good account of himself but in the last minute slipped, the pin following at 9:36. - This pzrtnre show: how the Jamestown Colonist: exrhhnged tobacco for hrhley. Tech won both games in last year’s Michigan outing with Normal and Wayne University. Although Ar— mour held a substantial lead over their Michigan rival last week, the game promises to be a lot tougher on Michigan’s floor, says Coach Krafft. Last year Tech emerged tops in a close race by only a two point mar- gin. They defeated Wayne by 20 points. Detroit Unknown Quantity The chhmen have played Mich- igan State for the past ten years but have not met Detroit U. for seven years. Detroit will be the tougher opponent because of Armour’s lack of information on their tactics. A squad of eight or nine players, coach, and manager will travel by rail for the Saturday night game with Normal. From there on to De trait in time for a Monday night hat- tle to conclude their “road" program. The Techawks will discontinue practice during; examinations but will resume it a few days before the trip. (lo-captains Dollcnmaicr and Warner, high scorers Heike and Mom, and O’Brien, who was injured in the George Williams’ game and missed in the succeeding ones, will constitute the regulars. TEQlEl NEWS ’TEGlLl’é WREGHT JR. ~ MEETBRENGS 002' PROMISING MEN Notwithstanding a 61-25 losing score against Wright Junior College last Monday, January 20, Armour Tech’s swimmers were able to get some good out of the meet by initi~ ating several promising newcomers to competition. The team eked out only one first but built up their smaller score on quite a bunch of seconds. As an exciting start for the cve~ ning the 165 yard relay finished with Armour only one foot behind Wright after coming up from two lengths behind. The second event, the 100 yard breast, was even closer, Cup- tain Knaus of Armour taking it easy for the first three laps and then Spurting ahead of the leaders to cap- ture Armour’s only first. Svagdis, an Armour newcomer, was within half a yard at the finish and has the earmarks of a potential winner in the breast division with his overarm stroke. Wright Takes the Rest The other events were all alike with Wright taking first place and Armour usually coming in second. Svagdis, also a new Armour man, showed up remarkably well, and with plenty of practice it is likely that the team Will be built up to its for- mer strength. Summaries yd. relay—Won by Wright.
