Page Four fiver E00 Athletes Compete in First invitational Meet Donald Paul Breaks Shot l’ut Record of Bartlett Gym Over one hundred college and uni- versity athletes competed in the first annual Invitation Track Meet held in Bartlett Gym last Friday afternoon before a crowd of several hundrei spectators. By taking eight first places out of eleven events, the Uni— versity of Chicago track men easily proved their superiority to the other teams. The outstanding event of the afternoon came when Don Paul, of Armour, broke the gymnasium record for the shot-put when he heaved the lG-pound bullet a distance of 45 feet 8 5—8 inches, beating the old mark held by Buck Weaver, Chicago foot- ball star. Weaver came second in the event, followed by Libby of Chicago, who placed third. The old gymnasium record was 45 feet 3 inches. Armour also showed up well in the twoqnile run, taking three out of the five places. Smith, James, and Hodg— son placed third, fourth and fifth re- spectively for Armour. In the 440 yard run, Fox of Ar— mour placed third, followed by Ransel of Armour, in the first of the quarter— milc races. In the second race, Sturm of Armour placed third. In the 880 yard run, lversen and Timmermans of Armour placed fourth and fifth re— spectively. Nelson of Butler easily defeated Sam Frey, Indoor Champion of the Big Ten, of Chicago, in the high jump.
